Anatomy of an Internet scam pt 2

So, after communicating to this person that I was serious, and wasn't about to be scammed, they sent me the following email:
Having concluded all arrangement with the shipper, this is to notify you that I will be transferring your money shortly. I will also be adding the shippers money to the total amount I am sending and this is due to the fact that, I am presently off-shore and have no other means of transferring the shipper's money directly. So, I implore you to proceed to any Western Union Money Transfer outlet and have the excess funds transferred from your pocket to the shipper's information asap via Western Union Money Transfer and get back to paypal via email with the transfer details so that paypal can complete the full processing of your money into your account after all transaction data (Western Union Money Transfer details) is confirmed by paypal. As an added security measures, paypal will also confirm my shipper's identity to you on the payment confirmation page that you will receive in your paypal email address as soon as I have your money sent.

regards
Shortly thereafter, I received an email from Paypal (or at least, designed to look like it was from Paypal) which suspiciously came from a Gmail address ladybug.val824@gmail.com; on behalf of; service@paypal.com. [transactionsverification@consultant.com]....On behalf of service@paypal.com?  Seriously?  What kind of horrible conman is this clown?  I mean, I was really hoping for something that I'd have to actually investigate, but this?  Holy crap, talk about amateur stuff:

Looks legit, right?  Well, ok, perhaps not when you actually LOOK at it.  For example, why would Paypal encourage and assist you to use one of their competitors, Western Union?  Additionally, I checked my Paypal account and there was no such deposit made.  Also, why would service@paypal.com use a Gmail address?  Truly we could attribute the "Wicnita KS" to a typo, but seriously? The zip is indeed Wichita, so this Jaison Moravec likely lives there.  Why the FBI hasn't hunted his ass down and beaten him with a stick, I don't know.  Likely because he doesn't actually exist, just like that address doesn't actually exist.  I'd be more than happy to work with Western Union and give this clown the info that I sent the cash, only to have this idiot show up to get it and have them bust him...but I suppose $350 bucks isn't worth their time...Although I'm thinking I'm not the first nor last.

So, after emailing these clowns the following:

Worst fake ever. Seriously, you expect someone with half a brain to believe this sort of stupidity

Scammers like you should die in a fire. Glad I didn't remove the listing from Craigslist.

You suck as a human being and as a con-artist.
I receive this:
Federal Bureau of InvestigationHeader Cell
Image

We received complaint over the money sent into your PayPal account by the Fawn Adams. We have rigorously cross checked the money sent to you and was confirmed and intact but pending. We need to verify and be sure that you have sent the shippers fee via Western Union Money Transfer before your money can be funded into your PayPal account. This measure is taken for online security check for both the buyer/seller and we will like you to abide by all PayPal rules as regards this payment. Send the excess funds to the shipper in Kansas as soon as you see this email and get back to us with the receipt of the Western Union Money Transfer, so that we can verify it and credit your account with immediate effect.

We need to prove beyond all reasonable doubts that you are legitimate and that's why we need you to send us a proof of this transaction in order to secure the buyer from fraud.

Here's the email address that the Western Union Money Transfer details should be sent to:  transactionsverification@consultant.com.

Note:
Failure to abide by this specified instruction may lead to your name and address being forwarded to the law enforcement agency in your state to get you arrested because, you are practicing scam. Your account with PayPal will be blocked. In order to avoid this, send the excess funds withing 24 hours and send details to PayPal customer service department for verification. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any comment on this issue at(transactionsverification@consultant.com).

<><><><>

OOOOhhh...I know they didn't...Bringing in the FBI? Because I didn't pay them? So now I'm the scammer? Well, not so much...again, looking at the return address, it comes from ladybug.val824@gmail.com; on behalf of; service@paypal.com. [transactionsverification@consultant.com]. Seriously? Now the FBI is using Gmail accounts to send out their investigative emails which are being sent on behalf of Paypal? Man, I'm starting to get confused? Is it the FBI or Paypal that's investigating this? Oh, and by the way, the special agent listed as the sender, has been retired for 7 months from the FBI (I didn't list him here because the guy served our country well and doesn't deserve any more bad press).
So, once again, I've told these ass-munching twits to die in a fire and please tell me their home addresses so I can come over and show them just how stupid they are.

I've not heard back yet, but I'm sure it'll be amusing. And I'll post it all here.

Thanks so much for your post. I just received the exact same notes from Fawn Adams yesterday regarding my Craigslist item. It made me suspicious, so I Googled and found your post.

I got the same EXACT email yesterday. I have a Jeep for sale on craigslist. Same bad grammar and same phone number for the "shipper". Thanks for posting this!

Well it looks like she is still at it. We have been trying to sell a van and thought at last we were going to sell it and get what we wanted. I read the email this morning (word for word just like yours) and it just didn't sound right.I called my son-in-law who happens to be more internet savy than me andin a matter of minutes he sent me a link to your post. Thanks for posting this, you saved me from a heartache that I couldn't afford right now.

Same thing here. We listed in craigslist and had the same email sent from Fawn Adams. Thanks for the post!!

Glad I googled Fawn Adams before responding---I got the same response to a Craigslist posting today. Thanks for saving me a ton of time I don't have to waste.

Something similar happened to me recently. If you want a laugh, go read my "note" on Facebook. :-) https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150448083382782

any idea where Fawn lives? I'm trying to track down a physical address for this dumbass, i've informed them that they can either just tell me their physical location, or else I'll track it down myself and if that happens they might have more to worry about that a slap on the wrist from the FBI (maybe more of a slap on the head with baseball bat >D) I got the exact same text pretty much and thought the same thing, who would want my motorcycle that bad w/out even coming to see it?

There still at it, got the same message today for a boat. Its the second scam in two weeks. Paypal, by phone, was very easy to work with and helped me realize the first one was a scam.

Oh, I'd love to find "her" and introduce her to my friends Louis and Slugger.
I tried tracking down some of the IPs from the original emails, but they were from anonymous proxies, so not easily tracked.

If anyone has been scammed by Fawn Adams, please email me so I can get in touch with you. I am building a case against this person and need your help. dcrouthamel@kinnelonpd.org or contact Det. Crouthamel at Kinnelon PD 973-838-1124.
No, it's not a scam!

Same scam is now using the name Anna Durr.Otherwise exactly the same wording. What idiots.

Thank you SO much for posting this! This just happened to me, and I have not been selling online for long at all- so these emails made me uneasy at first, but I really felt it to all be a scam.

I am often too trusting- I received these very same correspondences almost verbatim.

These people are just awful. Mine was in the U.S. but had no access to a telephone. Then, all of a sudden, I am trying to take advantage of "her" because she is overseas and cannot "defend" herself.

Now, the FBI is just going to have to come find me-- I suppose. I will not be sending money or my item that is up for sale by way of Western Union or her "concluded" shippers.

Oh my gosh-- thank you for posting this again. This is the stupidest thing I have ever experienced in my whole entire life. By the way, all readers, my scammer was "Anna Durr".

Same thing happened to me and my bf but with a girl named Marie Keller...It's crazy how people think they can get away with such things...but its even crazier that the law wont do anything about it but say sorry and you shouldn't have did that. But the person that scammed us actually talked like a real person when it was Marie Keller...but not when the so called pay pal started emailing us. But o well we lost some money to some stupid people but we was told in time by the actual pay pal so we could cancel the other 430. I felt so dumb when this happened. and it did literally just happen, but we will live. We was trying to sell a 700xx 2008 honda 4 wheeler. O well we get to keep it a lil longer i guess =] the sad thing was I thought something was fishy but my bf told me to ignore it cuz we needed the money bad. I even told them sorry bastards that my dog needed surgery and that was the only reason we was selling it. Some people are just so heartless though...

Anonymous said...

Ditto the last guy. Her new name is Marie Keller, except her "shipper" is in Portland, OR now. I took down my listing when she asked me to, but when I started reading up on scams, I quickly put it back up.

Rachel Fagerberg said...

I'm so glad I googled the phone number. Your blog came up first. THANK YOU.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the helpful post, which I found via a search after Marie Keller sent us the same sort of paypal email scam. You might be pleased to hear she is still offshore and doesn't know the rules of grammar.

Anonymous said...

Exact same situation here.

Marie Keller and western union money order sent to OR.

Initial thought was sketchy, but ok, then sketchy, then yeah this is probably a scam, to yep scam.

Thank you for your posting. Seeing your post made it clearly 100% scam.

Yes, I too just received the same from Anna Durr. Thanks for having this blog!

On a side note for airline deals do not book any flights through DIRECT AIR. They run specials to purchase tickets in advance and then when the time comes you cannot get through to them to book a flight.

I got the same scam email, this time using the name "Meryl White" of the 11th Air Force at Elmendorf Air Force Base in AK. Wonder what it's going to cost him to ship my 75 pound item from SC to AK? :-)

I got one today from Meryl White, a marine engineer and presently off-shore!!! I have a Craigslist add also, for PDR tools, and he wants to buy this for his son in Ohio. as a birthday present!! Get real, these are body shop tools. When he asked for my Paypal Account info AND password, I didn't reply just sent everything to Craigslist. I do Internet security as my part-time job, and this is the 5th time I've seen this crap in 10 days from various friends emails. Idiots----

1:Your PayPal e-Mail Address
2: Home Address

As soon as you get back to me with your PayPal email, I'll proceed
with full Payment. I look forward to reading from you soon.

Disgusting that she would claim to be working for a charitable cause to garner credibility. She claimed to post payment to Paypal (which we never received) that exceeded the listing amount by $900 and said we needed to Western Union her the difference.

Yep i just got an email from Rebecca Rebarich (coli.aliban@blumail.org) with exactly the same wording. Thankfully my post was on behalf of my boss at work for some shop equipment so i felt compelled to see if i could find more information on this person because it sounded kinda fishy. So glad i found this blog post, as i was also working with a coworker to track down our paypal information.

I just got hit by rebecca rebarich using the jijikensaku@gmail.com addy with the identical message regarding my CL offer of a piano for sale. Googled both names and found that there really are ladies with those names--rebecca is a Navy personnel affiliated with submarines, and jiji is a newspaper man? woman? in the far east. However, I doubt that these two people know each other, and I can't imagine either of them has the faulty command of English on display in this scam. I STARTED my escapade with him/her/them by googling and discovering this website--and will end with turning them in to CL, and ignoring any further mssg from whomever this actually happens to be. Thanks!

Just got hit by "Anna Durr" over the weekend while trying to sell my elliptical. She gave me the same emails and harrassment as all you other people. I knew it was fishy, but after I googled this person, it lead me to your blog. Thank you so much for taking the time to bring awareness of this monster(s). Something needs to be done about this!! Using the name Vanessa Jones...same scam

It just blows me away how they can even think of a way to scam people while at the same time they toss grammar and spelling out the door. One thing I did notice on some of the original emails supposedly from PayPal was the ™ at the end of "PayPal" actually looked like a small dot. No spaces after periods, verb tense nonexistant, plurals and singulars incorrect, etc... Going to run a few tracerts and other nifty network tools, get a valid IP address and...well, you get the message...! I had a friend selling some of my furniture for me and he almost got suckered into sending $900 when he got a bogus email saying he had been reported to the "Local Sheriff Police office"...wtf is a Sheriff Police office? He was told to send the money within 6 hours to a London addres...problem with the math there was the fact it was after 0100 CST, nothing open here and that would still have been a bit in the wee hours of the AM in London. I just happened to contact my buddy and tell him..."WHOA....Hold on there!!!" Just didn't sound right.

Aside from this one, anybody get anything something similiar from San Diego?

Thanks, hey and if anyone wants to help do a little vigilante DOS Command tracing with me, give a yell...get a valid IP address for the putz and then get enough folks to do some 24/7 pinging...he he he

Same thing happened to me today but the person used the name of a Commander in the US Navy. Can't get much lower than that. Thanks all for posting your stories.

I just had the pleasure of dealing with Anna Durr. I strung this moran around to amuse myself a little bit. this is what completely set me off and yes I went apeshit after this email "you will have to send the money from your personal pocket to the pick
up agent and get back to paypal with the western union details and get your account credited" The very fact this jerk had a the balls to actually come out and flat out basically tell me theyre gonna scam me out of money made me so angry. I hate when people think theyre so slick and treat you like you like an idiot. I was so tempted to go to Western Union and try to find a way to screw this jackass. My "shipping agent" was from Wilmington NC. BTW if anyone needs a server rack or copier machine (printer, copier, scanner) let me know HAHAHA

Rcvd the same BS email also and told her she was full of crap and she would not be scamming me!!!

Thank for your mail. Am satisfied with your advert price, as am requesting this transaction should be done via PayPal so the Pay Pal charges is on me. If my offer is accepted, Get back to me with your PayPal email and your name or send me PayPal invoice so i can pay you right away as soon as i conclude with my shipper. I am always busy at work and do not have much time around me to make or answer calls. Make sure you get back to me so that we can arrange for pick up as i will like the item to be picked at your residence location. Confirm the sales to me by removing it from the CL post.

Rebecca.

This is the REAL Rebecca Rebarich. I am in the military and someone has stolen my name to scam people. I am so sorry for the pain this person has caused others as well as me. I don't understand why people are so evil.

Jeff Johnson said...

Rebecca, I'm sorry that some assface has caused us to use your name in vain. Unfortunately, people are scumbags...or at least, some of them are.

Thanks for reading and for commenting.

CAUTION: No matter the name,if the email is "jijikensaku@gmail.com" they are trying to scam you. They respond to Craigslist Ads, try to "arrange a shipper to pick up the item" then have you PAY the PayPal or Western Union for the (usually) expensive shipping of the item. Of course, no one is coming to "pick up" the item, but they sure will "cash in" on the "shipment fee". AVOID!!! AVOID!!! AVOID!!! Solution: only do LOCAL pickup and CASH deals on Craigslist!! They will go away.

Rebecca, no need to apologize. It's this spammer who should apologize for being so low as to impersonate a naval officer. Thank you for your service.

PS. Just received the same exact email from jijikensaku@gmail.com. The initial email comes from a different email address, probably because craigslist would catch the main one.

Hi

Listed a few pieces of antiques on Craigs List and got some replies which made me suspect something. After seeing these postings, I could see this was a scam. Here is what I received from

First email:

via my online paypal account. However, paypal is the world leading

Please i need you to visit their web site at www.paypal.com and sign

thanks to whoever started this post and has contributed. I got the following "same" comments from "Vallerie Wells" vikkydav61@gmail.com, and from drummerboy1222@aol.com

I have just completed the payment and i am sure PayPal would have sent
you a Confirmation email . Please, check all your mail
folders(inbox,spam and junk mail). I sent a total Payment of $4,900. i
added $900 but $800 will be sent to my Pick Up Agent via Western
Union. The extra $100 is to cover the western union fee and PayPal
charges. PayPal will not release the funds until you email them the
Western Union details for verification and also to enable my pick up
agent to come for pick up and inspection. Here is the agent's details
where the money will be sent.

NAME: VALERIE WELLS

ADDRESS: 1314 W Gore Blvd # 3,
Lawton, OK 73501.
USA.

Please get the necessary details sent to PayPal (Money Transfer Control
Number)MTCN and Sender's Name and Address used to send the $800.00USD
so that they can release the whole funds into your account. Please get
back to me once it's done.

I just got my email from her, with a $750 shipping. I had offered shipping at $400. Amazing, I owe whoever started this bulletin an ice cold beer! I am in the middle of a transaction with them now. I wish I knew what authority cares. I would get them in on this. Thanks again saved me $750 and my $2100 purchase fee.

I just received a very strange inquiry about an antique Chinese coffee table I had listed on Craigslist in the Milwaukee market.

Gmail informed me that the [from] was [R. brick@netins.net via craigslist.org] and the [reply-to] was ["R." ].

The initial response was, "IS YOUR FURNITURE STILL FOR SALE? ........" to which I replied, "Greetings. I apologize profusely for not responding to you immediately. Yes, our furniture is still for sale. Kindest regards."

I then received a reply from the same email address, this time with the name "Rebecca Rebarich" listed. It read, "Thank for your mail. I immediately Google'd the email address and name and found this thread. I of course was suspicious upon reading the email, but I feel awful for people who aren't as savvy with this kind of thing as the rest of us and could possibly be scammed by these jerks. Hard to believe it's been going on for over a year. Thank you all for sharing your experiences!

NOw I know who to avoid.

I can't believe this scam is still going on. I just had someone named Amy Jones at "Amy Jones " try to pull the same scam on me. I'm hoping they send the FBI email so I can log a complaint with IC3 at ic3.gov for those who want to file. Impersonating the FBI usually gets people's attention. This is a variant of the Spanish prisoner scam or 419 scam if anyone is interested, it's been around for 100 years. These people are such scumbags they deserve what they get at hands of the authorities.

Here is a new name they us, it just happen to me.

But ymail and gmail are not used by PayPal,
That was a red flag.

This is sad that people have to think that is what they have to do to make a living.

That Rebecca Rebarich strikes again. I tried to sell my dad's car and she replied with this bullshit:

I have contact a private courier agent who will come for the Pick up after the payment have been made... so no shipping included. i will be paying you through PayPal It's pretty easy to set up a PayPal account at www.paypal.com it's just a few minutes away from signing up. it's safe and secure for both Parties and i have been using PayPal to buy and sell for years now without problems, I will need these following details so i can proceed with the payment right away.

1:Is it Fully Registered and Insured?
2:Reason for Sale?
3:Engine Status

5:More pictures if available..
6:Home Address and Pick up location. Painting or Rust Involved?

The first response came as a normal response via the website, the last 3 email addresses were sent to me as text messages asking me to send details of the ads. I was dumb enough to answer the four of them :(

Same thing happened to me, under the same email address and the name Layva Freedy stated they lived in Illinois. I wrote them back and told them that my local police department said they were scam artist and if they wanted to purchase the vehicle, they can meet me there

These people are certainly busy.
Catherine Dyer just tried to purchase an engine that I have on CL "sight unseen" for her brother. A little odd don't you think?

Anonymous said...

Layva Freedy just contacted me so it hasn't gone away. I am selling a pickup on Torquelist. I was suspicious when the second email Layva sent was to purchase without driving it. Also, they went straight to asking for Paypal info even though I told them payment is cash or cashiers check.
